Hi, Iām Carey
A native to Chicago, I was raised an athlete, playing elite club soccer since the age of 6 until receiving a soccer scholarship to Saint Xavier University. There, I received my degree in Communications and Writing with first hopes to be a journalist, then political speech writer, then unknown. So, I headed to graduate school instead.
While receiving my masters in Interactive Media, I studied photography, videography, digital design, and computer programming. My final thesis examined optimized solutions for the declining publishing industry, considering interactive and supportive digital application. Using PhoneGap, now Adobe Cordova, I programmed my first iPad application building an interactive playground to summarize long, content-heavy text. During school, I attended the SXSW conference and was introduced to the booming technology industry. I was hired directly out of school to be a Software Engineer at Groupon.
For over five years, I worked at Groupon as a software engineer and marketing lead developing and strategizing our in-house service for email delivery, sending over 6 million emails per day. Our systems expanded internationally, increasing our audience size and capacity of our systems. I worked in Chicago, Seattle, Dublin, and, eventually, relocated to Palo Alto, CA.
My growth during my tenure at Groupon is hard to sum up. Starting with basic HTML/CSS, to Javascript programming, slinging SQL queries and processing Hadoop data, internationalizing an entire Java system sending millions of emails, A/B testing in said Java framework, designing engaging user interfaces, researching and analyzing user data, collaborating over marketing strategies, succeeding and, most importantly, failing. My career beginning was tough and exhilarating, and I have taken my failures and harnessed my strengths to become a eCommerce and technology specialists for many clients and companies.
Outside of my work, I am an extensive traveler, globe-trotting to the French Alps, the Seychelles, Portugal, and the Arctic to name a few. When not traveling or conquering your inboxes, I can be found teaching yoga in Salt Lake City or sleeping out of the back of my car as I travel the country looking for new places to paraglide with my corgi, Frank.
PS: I do a lot of fun activities, which you can check out here
